MULTICULTURAL DAY DESIGN CONTEST WINNERS ON DISPLAY!

Congratulations to Mitchell Carlson, Dan Leidenfrost, and Elena Avanesova--the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in the 2012 Multicultural Day Thematic Design Contest. The theme this year is "Dance with the Conflict," and Mitchell's winning design will be used on all of the publicity for the event--including the sweatshirts and t-shirts available for purchase later this semester.

The three winning designs, as well as the designs of the rest of the contest participants, are on display in the case right inside the east front door of Library Learning Resources. All of the participants are students in Professor Joseph Martin's GR M31 Graphic Design Class.

STUDENT SCULPTURES ON DISPLAY IN THE LIBRARY

Again this semester, Professor Cynthia Minet's Beginning Sculpture class is displaying their work in the Library.

Come to the 3rd floor of the Library to see a man pumping iron, a swimming elephant, and a sea lion eating a fish. These are three of the seven cardboard sculptures on display.

Most of the sculptures are near the south-facing windows. One is near the stairs.

Diane Lefer won the Mary McCarthy Prize for Short Fiction for her book "California Transit: Stories." On Wednesday 1/25 she'll be the Guest Reader at the Moorpark College Poetry Read. A faculty reader, readings from the MC Poetry Workshop, and an open mic will also be featured.

ILLUSTRATED STUDENT ESSAYS ON DISPLAY!

Students in Sandra Hunter's English M01 class were required to read "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz, and write papers either comparing the main character Oscar to another literary character, or on the effect of the brutal Trujillo regime on women in the Dominican Republic.

As an alternative, the students could write a paper that explores a job or work study that prepares them for a career--including why they became interested in the career and how they found the job, a typical day on the job, analysis of a procedure or process in a typical day, and where they might be in five years time in pursuit of the career.

Several of the students illustrated their essays, and five of these are displayed on the west side of the LLR 2nd floor display case. Thanks to Sandra Hunter, as well as Zach Kaneshiro, Erica Orr, Allison Planck, Ben Torres, and Natalie Wood.

Two New Library Displays

On one side of the display case near the library entrance you'll find a Thanksgiving display of history books related to the Pilgrims, the Mayflower, and the founding of the United States.

The display on the other side relates to National American Indian Heritage Month. You'll see books in the areas of history, cultural anthropology, and sociology.

If you wish to check any of these books out, you can! Just see the librarian at the Reference Desk.

DAILY BOOK SALE IN THE LIBRARY

The Moorpark College Library receives many book donations throughout the year. Not all of these can be added to the collection, so they are sold with the proceeds going into the Library's trust account.

Check out the sale shelves to the right of the Circulation Desk near the 2nd floor print station. The books are generally priced at 50 cents or a dollar. You can pay for your purchases at the Circulation Desk.

Did you know that The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language has faced censorship because it contains 39 objectionable words? (LA Times,9/27/11)

See the Banned Books Week display in LLR and you may be surprised at some of the titles. The display is located on the west side of the display case just inside the library doors. A few books are also displayed on the tops of the low shelves behind the Reference Desk.

The Hispanic Heritage Month display continues on the east side of the display case.

STUDENT SCULPTURES IN LLR!!!

Check out the student sculptures on display on the 3rd Floor of the Library Learning Resources building. Group projects by students in Cynthia Minet's Sculpture I class (ART M77) are located near the top of the stairs and by the south windows.

Using cardboard, students were asked to make Cubist- and Constructivist-style interpretations of animals, fruits, objects, or other subjects of their choice.

Be sure to see all seven sculptures: Giraffe, Maia (figure), Skull, Ballerina, Spinning Top, Monkey, Elenor (deer).

The Spring Poetry Jam is on Monday the 2nd of May from 5:30 to 6:30pm on the 3rd floor of Library Learning Resources. Welcome Stephen Kutay - Our New Library & Learning Resources Supervisor

Steve Kutay is the new Learning Resources Supervisor at the Library and Learning Resources. He supervises classified and student staff activity for the Learning Center, Library Circulation and Library Technical Services. Steve has thirteen years combined experience with academic library work from the UCLA and Cal Arts campuses and most recently as a Digital Archivist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. He holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the UCLA School of Music.

Multicultural Day Display in LLR

Snapshot: One Day in the Life of California Libraries

The California Library Association is asking libraries to collect usage data, photos, and patron testimonials on California Library Snapshot Day, Tuesday, October 5th. The data gathered will be used to advocate for libraries at the state and local level, and to demonstrate the importance of libraries to California's citizens.

The Moorpark College Library, along with other community college, university, school, and public libraries, will participate by taking photographs and gathering statistics on that day. Data gathered will include number of registered users, visitors to the library, items checked out, reference questions answered, library computers used, and licensed database usage.

National Hispanic Heritage Month Display

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from September 15th through October 15th. You'll see and hear cultural programming on PBS, NPR, and other television and radio stations. Many communities have events celebrating the Hispanic community and culture.

Constitution Day Display

Friday, September 17th, is Constitution Day. This special day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on that day in 1787.

Welcome Ellen - Our New Librarian

The library is very excited to announce the addition of Ellen Carey. Ellen has a long and varied work history shaped by a passion for both learning and teaching new things. She has worked as a carpenter, fundraiser, secretary, leadership trainer, and rock climbing instructor, and has studied dance, French, poetry, Buddhism, and art, among many other things.

Ellen received her master’s in library and information science from Simmons College in 2004, having completed her bachelors’ degree at Mount Holyoke College through a program designed for adult women returning to college. She went on to work at Mount Holyoke as a reference librarian and coordinator of a program to recruit undergraduates from underrepresented groups into the field of librarianship.

Before coming to Moorpark College, Ellen served as Library Co-Coordinator at Greenfield Community College in Massachusetts for five years. There she supervised Public Services, spearheaded the library’s outreach efforts, and developed information literacy instruction programming. In her free time, Ellen enjoys hiking, camping, kayaking, meditation, and making art. Having just moved to California from Massachusetts, she is delighted to bring her love of the outdoors to a more hospitable climate, and her passion for teaching and learning to the Moorpark College community.

NATIONAL WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH DISPLAY

March is National Women's History Month. Created by President Carter in 1980, Congress expanded National Women's History Week to a month in 1987. This year's theme is "Writing Women Back into History." The history of women often seems to be written in invisible ink. Even when recognized in their own times, women are often not included in history textbooks.

A display of books on the history of women--from ancient Egypt through modern times--can be viewed in the display case by the entrance to the Library Learning Resources (LLR) building through the end of the month.

Jennifer Kwon Dobbs has published poems in 5 AM, Cimarron Review, Crazyhorse, Cream City Review, Poetry NZ, Tulane Review, Echoes Upon Eches (Temple UP 2003), and Contemporary Voices from the Eastern World: An Anthology of Poems (W.W. Norton 2007). Her poetry has appeared on radio and in film, and her song-cycle collaborations with classical music composers have debuted in New York and Los Angeles . She currently teaches honors writing courses at the University of Southern California , where she is a doctoral candidate in the Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing Program. She has won the White Pine Press Poetry Prize for her first book Paper Pavilions .

Welcome to our new library assistant, Gilbert Downs

The Library welcomes Gilbert Downs, our new library assistant. Gilbert was born and raised in Camarillo where he attended Cornerstone Christian School from 1st to twelfth grade. In high school, he kept himself busy by working in his school's day care and working as an intern for Assemblyman Nao Takasugi. Upon graduating from high school, he enrolled in a few different colleges including Moorpark College. During this time he worked at the Camarillo Family YMCA in the child care and sports programs. In 1999, he began working for Pleasant Valley School District. He was the Library Media Technician at a small elementary school for two years and then moved on to work as an Instructional Media Technician at PVSD's district offices. After working at the district office for almost three years, he went on to work at one of PVSD's mddle schools where he stayed for four years. When he is not working, he likes to participate and watch many sports, especially hockey. He has played and coached hockey for many years. He is very excited to be part of Moorpark College's Library team!

Starting on February 14th, a Moorpark poet will do a mini-feature at each of the Reads. Adam Poisal is the first Moorpark poet. He's now the host of Vox, a poetry venue in Ventura. Alisha Westerman, the guest poet, is a young Caribbean writer, photographer and musician who writes and performs with her Long Beach band, Mellow Mood.

Since the Poetry Read is on Valentine's Day, students are invited to read a Valentine's Day poem (not necessarily theirs). This can also be an anti-Valentine's Day poem! Come along and sign up for open mic.

Something New!! in the Library - Two New Databases

The Library has just added two new databases to its collection of online resources. One is AnthroSource and the other ARTstor. AnthroSource is developed by the American Anthropological Association and provides citations to journal articles in the field of anthropological research. This database is not available from off-campus computers.

ARTstor, a rich digital library, includes more than 500,000 images from the areas of design, decorative arts, photography, and other forms of art. It is currently available from on-campus computers. For off-campus computers, please contact the Reference Librarian at 378-1472 to inquire about off-campus access.

" Brendan Constantine was born and raised in Los Angeles in a household where the works of Shakspeare and Gerard Manly Hokins were read as bedtime stories. His poetry has appeared in numerous journals most notably Artlife, The Cider Press Review, Directions, StellaZine and the L.A. Times best seller The Underground Guide To Los Angeles . Most recently a portion from his 1999 collection Dante’s Casino was selected as essential reading as part of Antioch University’s MFA in Poetry curriculum for 2002/03. Other books of poetry include Antenna (1997 Past Modern Press), Return to IKNOWEXACTLY WHATYOUMEANSVILLE (1998 Inevitable Press), and One Matador (2000 Inevitable Press). Mr. Constantine is currently poet in residence at Venice High School and last year was made a fellow at Idyllwild’s College of the Arts. Two new collections of poetry Hyenas 54 and Zombie Dovecote are due out within the next year. In February of 2002 Mr. Constantine was nominated to the California Governor’s office as a candidate for Poet Laureate of the State of California. He lives in Hollywood with his cat Maggie."
